THE INCESSANT NATIONAL GRID COLLAPSE AND POSSIBLE BREAKTHROUGH SOLUTIONS

The Nigerian National Grid is an interconnection of all the power supply infrastructure and networks within the country which is controlled by the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo. During President Buhari’s Administration from 2015 – 2023, the country experienced a total of 99 national grid collapses which put a great question on the stability of our grid network and the possible competence of the managerial hands on the system.

So far, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s regime, we read more

WHAT ACTUALLY IS NATIONAL GRID COLLAPSE

WHAT ACTUALLY IS NATIONAL GRID COLLAPSE?

Prior to the restoration of the collapsed national grid, there have been a lot of questions about what the national grid actually is, this question became quite obvious considering the publicity that this collapse had over the previous collapses that had occurred during the past years, maybe because of the current challenges facing the country such as increased fuel rate (PMS, AGO, ATK and DPK), hard economic crises, and many other challenges facing the read more

Site Security Highly Required on all Projects

Site Security Highly Required on all Projects

In the cause of the execution of a site project, there are always going to be security threats specific to that site which can be difficult to manage such as theft of uninstalled materials, equipment and even installed materials, such as copper wire, fittings and pipes that can be torn out of walls, hence the need to prioritize security.

Most Electrical Engineers overlook the significance of security on projects involving residential buildings considering the less quantity of materials required read more

GFCI Socket Outlet

GFCI SOCKET OUTLET
A New Innovation to Wall Socket Design

Safety at home has always been the clamour of all Electrical Engineers. It is observed that wall socket failure accounts for about 25% Electrical shocks in Nigeria hence the National Electrical code has recommended the use of GFCI sockets in our today’s home.

GFCI Socket
GFCI is the acronym for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters, it is designed to guard people against electric shock by monitoring electrical current and cutting power when the outlets detects an inbalance or excess current flow through an unintended path.  GFCI are highly sensitive and possess a fast response time than circuit breakers or fuses, it is designed to respond before electricity can affect your heart  beat i.e 1/30th of a second. The greatest advantage of this is that it can work in sockets that aren’t properly earthed, but we always advise that all outlets should be earthed properly.

Where GFCI’s Should be Used.
According to the National Code, GFCI outlets should be used in moist or wet locations of the home to protect people from being shocked. E.g Bars, Spa, Pools, Kitchen, Bathrooms, Laundry e.t.c

How to Recognise GFCI
GFCI outlets are easily recognized by the “Test” and “Reset” buttons on the socket outlet face. These buttons enables you to test regularly that your GFCI are functioning properly and to required standard. Testing your GFCI is actually fast and easy, simply press the Test button and ensure that the electrical flow has been cut off either using an electrical bulb or a small appliance, then you press the reset button to restore power.

GFCI has been in existence, but not yet widely accepted, you could contact DELWIT (www.delwit.com) to assist with the implementation of this technology to safe guard you and the people around you.

Determination of Cable Sizes for Various Current Ratings

Determination of Cable Sizes for Various Current Ratings

I was opportune to visit a site at Obe, a small community in Benin City, Edo State where I was startled at what I saw the electrician do. Firstly, I observed that there was no registered Engineer on site (Civil/Electrical) all the artisans were all carrying out their duties based on their technical knowhow without an form of design or a qualified Engineer to guide. But whom do I blame? The Workmen? No, The Professional Engineers not on site? No, The successful Businessman Client? YES…
